JOSEPH VELASCO
AVID Site Co-coordinator,
AVID 9 Elective Teacher

Mr. Velasco has consistently brought passion and dedication to the program since its inception at SBHS in 2006.
Mr. V also teaches in the English Department and teaches Ethnic Studies classes as well as being the advisor for the Ethnic Studies Club, Folklorico Club, and the AVID Club. He is also a professional theater director and storyteller when he is not teaching. ​

VERONICA CALLES
AVID 10 Elective Teacher
Mrs. Calles has been teaching AVID since 2016. In addition to AVID she teaches English 10 Honors for the MAD Academy and ELD. Mrs. Calles has been a teacher at Santa Barbara High for 22 years. She is also a Santa Barbara native and an SBHS alumnus. Her interests include running, playing soccer, and reading.

TIA HANNAH
AVID 9 Elective Teacher

​Ms. Hannah graduated from Bowdoin College with a bachelor's degree in Education and English Literature. After college, she returned to her hometown Santa Barbara to teach English and joined Santa Barbara High School's AVID team in 2024. In addition to AVID she teaches 9th grade English for the Visual Arts and Design Academy (VADA) as well as AP Lang for the MAD academy. In her free time, she enjoys reading, swimming, and playing fetch with her dog, Goose.
