A HIGH ACADEMIC STANDARD

AVID at Santa Barbara High School places an emphasis on every aspect of our student’s growth and development. We take advantage of the natural curiosity students possess by having our teachers present new information in creative ways and teach through exploratory experiences.

Our general curriculum includes a variety of challenging courses that meet or exceed state requirements. Suitable class sizes and exceptional, qualified teachers allow AVID at Santa Barbara High School to offer an intimate and inclusive educational environment, while also ensuring each student receives the individualized attention and support they need.

The AVID Student

AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.  These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but may need extra support to academically grow to their potential.  Typically, AVID students will be the first in their families to attend college. AVID makes sure that each student is taking challenging courses and makes sure they are on track to attend college.  The AVID elective class is held within the regular school day and provides support and academic monitoring and tutoring.

Not only are students enrolled in the school's toughest classes, they are also enrolled in the AVID elective class.  For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking challenging questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that show students that college can be attainable.
